Garden Care

Garden care can be everything from watering/weeding to keeping the rodents out. Before you start gardening, it's always good to think about how you can going to protect your investment so that you get your full harvest.

Before You Dig

If you are going to plant a new garden this year, remember to call 'Gopher State One Call' at 1-800-252-1166 before you dig. This is a free service that will local your underground utility lines so that you don't dig into a phone or power or cable wire.

Fertilizing

I fertilize my garden twice a year, once when I plant and once about one month later. I use standard (10-10-10, nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) garden fertilizer and I don't use any type of weed killer or pesticide.

Watering

If it rains on a regular bases (at least once a week), then I usually don't have to water very often until the end of the summer.  In August, when it's 90 degrees and not a lot of rain, then I sometime water every other day in the evenings to avoid the hot sun evaporating the water like it would if I were to water during the afternoon.

Weeding

There are several ways to keep the weeds down without using weed killers.  Some people cover their garden with plastic before planting and then poke holes in the plastic when planting. I'm not a fan of using plastic because it's harder to plant rows of seeds and it doesn't let the soil breathe - but it does keep down the weeds.

Another option is to use fresh compost soil that has been produced by burning yard waste. The reason this soil keeps the weeds down is because the burning process kills ALL the seeds in the soil so that nothing grows but the seeds that you plant.  This is my preferred method of keeping the weeds down.

The worst thing you can do it over fertilize your garden (like putting cow waste on top) without first tilling under and removing the weeds, because you will be feeding the weeds which will choke out your crop. Farmers who put cow waste on their fields also use roundup to kill on the weeds.

Rabbit / Deer Fence

In my neighborhood I don't have to worry about deer eating my garden, but I do have plenty of rabbits. I've tried many things to keep the rabbits out of my garden, but nothing works better than a fence.

Any fence will do that job, but if you are planning to garden for many years, then I recommend building a fence with a wood frame and a wire mash with 1/4 inch small holes.  This type of fence can last for many years will little maintenance and will also keep out field mice.

Our Goal is to help you plant and grow your own vegetable garden.
